Marie Potel-Saville Joins the European Data Protection Board’s Expert Pool on Dark Patterns

This week is extra special as we celebrate a major milestone! Our founder, Marie Potel-Saville, has been selected to join the European Data Protection Board's Support Pool of Experts (SPE) in the field of dark patterns. This achievement reflects her six years of dedicated work combating dark patterns and promoting user empowerment through fair patterns.
Here are some of the highlights from her journey:
- Fair Patterns Development:
- 2 years of R&D to create the concept of fair patterns: interfaces that empower users to make informed and free choices.
- Creation of 23 fair patterns to date, with more in the pipeline.
- Launch of the first platform to combat dark patterns: www.fairpatterns.com.
- Privacy-Enhancing Projects:
- Redesigning global privacy notices for Tier-1 clients.
- Designing age-appropriate privacy policies, including co-creation workshops and user testing with minors.
- Collaborating with the CNIL to create model interfaces for empowering children and teens to better understand and exercise their rights.
- Developing neuroscience-based e-learning modules to boost understanding of privacy concepts.
- Creating decision-making tools to empower non-lawyers in making informed decisions.
- Research and Publications:
- Sharing best practices on privacy design during the EDPB public consultation on dark patterns guidelines, which were included in the final version.
- Published research and articles, including:
- “How to Solve the Dark Patterns Issue - A Human-Centered Approach” (CPDP 2023, to be published in 2024).
- “From Dark Patterns to Fair Patterns? Usable Taxonomy to Contribute Solving the Issue with Countermeasures” (Annual Privacy Forum, 2023).
Marie is excited to collaborate with the EDPB to further advance solutions for fighting online deception and manipulation.
